Costas Verdes
Costas Verdes is a Costa Rican nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring coastal ecosystems that have been degraded by human activities. Since its founding in 2009, the organization has led reforestation projects and empowered local communities to participate in environmental conservation efforts.
🌿 Mission and Impact
Costas Verdes focuses on rehabilitating coastal areas where native forests have been lost due to agriculture and development. By planting native tree species and involving local communities, they aim to restore biodiversity, prevent erosion, and enhance the natural beauty of these regions.
Their efforts have led to the planting of over 96,000 trees and the reintroduction of 96 native species across 35 beaches and communities. More than 12,000 volunteers and 30 local schools have participated in these initiatives, fostering a sense of stewardship and environmental responsibility.
🌱 Projects in Nosara
In the Nosara region, Costas Verdes has implemented several significant projects:
- BarriGuiones (Playa Guiones): Initiated in May 2011, this project covers approximately 23.7 hectares. It has seen the planting of 36,560 trees and the reintroduction of 83 native species. The project also supports three local nurseries producing over 12,000 trees annually.
- Playa Pelada: Started in 2019, this 6.7-hectare project has involved the planting of 4,742 trees and the reintroduction of 29 native species.
These projects not only restore natural habitats but also engage local schools and volunteers, strengthening community ties and environmental awareness.
🤝 Community Engagement
Costas Verdes emphasizes the importance of community involvement in their restoration efforts. They collaborate with local schools, businesses, and residents to organize tree-planting campaigns, educational workshops, and environmental awareness programs. This inclusive approach ensures the sustainability and long-term success of their projects.
